War Crimes investigations in Sri Lanka, and Tamil population.

Subject: RE: [GTF-Msia:1199] RESPONSE TO MR Gnanarajah

Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2010 21:03:33 -0700

Dear Mr. Gnanarajah,

The Tamil population is Sri Lanka has been always 18 to 18.5%.

Sinhala Buddhist is 70%

Sinhalese is 74%.

Muslims and Malays comprise of 7%.

There has been no changes is the population yet.

Your claim that Tamils are only 12% of the population is wrong.

Tamils in Sri Lanka are not considered terrorist.

Although LTTE has been proscribed as a Terrorist organization in the EU 3 years ago,

in US and Canada, and India, they all wanted Sri Lanka to negotiate a political settlement

with the LTTE and the Tamils. One also has to be mindful of the State Terrorism in Sri Lanka.

There were also political reasons for actions by certain governments, to proscribe an

organization which has been fighting against State tyranny for 30 years. If you recall the

ANC was also proscribed by these very same countries, and it's leader Nelson Mandela

was classified as a terrorist. Only last year, the USA removed him from the terrorist list.

Yasser Arafat and the PLO were also in the same classification as terrorist. Both in later

years won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The IC supported the CFA of 2002 and subsequent peace talks, including the 3 peace

talks President Rajapakse had, with the LTTE in 2006, after the LTTE installed Mahinda

Rajapakse as President, thanks to the boycott of Presidential elections promoted by the

LTTE. The Rajapakse-Tiran Alles-Emilkanthan triangle and financial transactions is another

episode and saga.

There is nobody in the diaspora who is keen on another armed struggle in Sri Lanka.

So there is no need to be concerned about it. But that does not mean a non violent

struggle, to expose the human rights violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity,

and other matters including sanctions are forgotten by the majority of the diaspora. EU and

UK imposed sanctions on Sri Lanka only a few days ago, by withdrawing the GSP Plus concessions, due to the GOSL and Rajapakses human rights record. US also has imposed

limited sanctions by passing into law in the Senate limiting cooperation and foreign aid

to Sri Lanka. Garment exports is dependent upon the purchases from the USA and UK,

whereas 45% of Sri Lanka's exports are garments.

The diaspora are not yet ready to "Kiss and Make UP" with those Sinhala politicians and

murderous military who were responsible for the murder of 40,000 Tamil civilians in the

last few weeks of the war, and the incarceration of 300,000 Tamil civilians in a cruel

and inhuman manner, which cannot be forgotten as KP and the military suggests.
The full democratic rights, civil rights and fundamental rights of the Tamils in

Sri Lanka needs to be restored and the NE need to be administered by the civilians and

freed from the military. It will be rubbish to assume that NE has returned to civilian rule.

The day the Tamils can freely fly a White flag, Black Flag, Red Flag, or Yellow Flag,

without the fear of being killed or beaten up by the military, para military or good

squads the Tamils will feel free to a certain degree.
One does not have to be in the Northern Province for 60 hours (including sleeping time)

to be qualified to speak, and write about the conditions of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

When the Jews were in Nazi concentration camps there were millions of Jews in other

countries including USA who spoke up and canvassed the Congress and Senate to take

action against the Nazis. After the war ended they also lobbied against the war criminals,

and their prosecution. Please be mindful of that.

The horrible incidents during the war perpetrated by forces close to the government

such as extra judicial killings, arbitrary arrest, torture, rape, beatings, disappearances,

kidnappings, abductions, killing and beating journalist, illegal detentions and all acts

of war against Geneva conventions need to be fully investigated by neutral organizations

such as the United Nations. All self respecting Tamils should support such internationally

coordinated and well thought of actions.
