Massive Tamil rally planned for Rajapaksa United Nations visit

New York - Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is set to address the United Nations General Assembly next week in New York. The National Council of Canadian Tamils has announced that it will stage a massive rally opposing his visit.
In a press release, the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) announced that they are opposed to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to the United Nations in New York where he is set to deliver a speech to the General Assembly next week.
Furthermore, Canadian Tamils will protest against Rajapaksa’s arrival and will urge the United States Ambassador to Canada to establish an “increased standard of accountability” that falls in line with the U.S. War Crimes Act and the Geneva Conventions.
“Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the International Crisis Group have all accused the Sri Lankan Government of serious human rights violations and violations of international law,” said NCCT spokesperson, Krisna Saravanamuttu. “In light of these accusations, the United Nations set up a panel, endorsed by the White House, to investigate the possibility of war crimes by Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government and his armed forces.”
Rajapaksa and his government have been accused by the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and public officials of countless human rights violations and war crimes. The Sri Lankan leader plans to address the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the United Nations panel to probe the allegations made in Sri Lanka.
