UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe unilaterally nominated TNA MP Sumanthiran as his nominee to the Parliamentary Council.TNA certain to reject. This is one of Ranil Wickramasinghe's bizarre decisions which would certainly cause much embarassement to him and the party. The UNP leader did not even consult Mr. Sumanthiran, the TNA leadership, nor his own party seniors when arriving at this decision. Sources close to Sumanthiran and the TNA say that they will not accept such a nomination when they consider the 18th amendment as illegal and TNA had voted against it.
Wickremasinghe announced his nomination following a request by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa from the Opposition Leader and the Prime Minister to nominate their representatives to the Parliamentary Council. This also clearly indicates and demonstrates the bankruptcy of the UNP, and Tamil sources question the UNP, why they did not want to appoint the senior attorney and National list MP, Swaminathan if he was so keen to please the speaker Chamal Rajapakse and his brother the President Mahinda Rajapakse. It is no wonder that even senior UNP member John Amaratunge is leaving the UNP as the next pole vaulter to join the GOSL. He has been promised a strong ministry at the next cabinet reshuffle. John Amaratunge is reported to be joining the President's delegation in New York for the UN sessions. Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims are scheduled to demonstrate against the President of Sri Lanka, which for the first time have all 3 communities unitedly showing their revulsion against the current government of Sri Lanka, and it's gross human rights violations, as well as war crimes/crimes against humanity.
