President Mahinda Rajapakse left for the United States today to take part in the United Nations General Assembly where he will also deliver a speech next week.Government sources told Daily Mirror online that the President left a few days in advance for personal reasons and will stay on for the official part of the trip where he will attend the UN General Assembly.External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris and President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga are also among the President’s delegation that will leave for New York shortly.This is President Rajapakse’s first visit to the UN since UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon appointed an Expert Panel on Sri Lanka despite the government’s strong objections.The Panel was appointed to advise the UN Chief on the incidents that took place during the final stages of the war.
