Sajith must ask Karu if he wants the Deputy Leadership – Ranil tells Kabir
2010-09-15

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has told UNP MP Kabir Hashim that he was not going to step down as the party leader and the Sajith Premadasa would have to ask for the party’s deputy leadership from Karu Jayasuriya if he wanted to.The UNP Leader had made this comment to Kabir when the latter had met Ranil at the Cambridge Terrace Opposition Leader’s Office with a set of proposals on behalf of Sajith.Kabir had proposed that Ranil take over the post of senior party leader and appoint Karu as the acting party leader while appointing Sajith as the

deputy leader. He had also said that Sajith had no objections to appointing either Dayasiri Jayasekera or Ravi Karunanayake begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting as the national organizer of the party. It is learnt that the UNP Leader had rejected the proposals and had asked Kabir to inform Sajith to get Karu’s approval for him to be appointed as the deputy leader.A coordinating officer for Karu Jayasuriya told us that there has so far not been any proposal about the deputy leadership from either the party leader, Sajith or Kabir. He said that Karu is of the stance that he would resign from his post if the party requested him to do so and would sit in the back benches of parliament and fight against the government. He further noted that Karu was busy organizing a programme called “Grama Charika” where the party reaches out to the grassroots aimed at the local government elections.

  1. Ranil is correct in rejecting Sajith Premadasa's proposals on party reform. Sajith's manipulations or attempts is only for his selfish and ambitious aspirations to become the leader of the UNP and Leader of the opposition now. Immediately.
There are several UNP MP's who are more senior to Sajith in the party and more qualified.
Even his academic qualifications are in doubt, as his claims of a University degree and master's degree from the London School of Economics.
Sajith Premadasa needs to come clean with his academic record especially at LSE, since he had already dropped out of the Maryland College, USA during 1994, soon after his father's assassination. UNP itself is unclear, about Sajith's record and what he did between 1994 and 1998 or 1999.
May be it's time those who are aspiring to lead the UNP like Ravi Karunanayake, Sajith Premadasa and others to provide their academic and professional qualifications to the party and their supporters.
It is well know that Ranil was in the University of Colombo and The Law College.
He too can provide his academic details as the current and future leader.

  2. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s manifesto is always paving the way for mortgaging Sri Lanka to international community, World Bank, IMF and the multinational corporations.
Since its existence it was UNP now being led by Ranil Wickremesinghe — which was responsible for all the antiTamil and antiMuslim agendas in Sri Lanka. It was UNP that was responsible for making more than a million Tamils speaking Sri Lankans of the Indian origin who toiled to build the economy of Sri Lanka voteless and stateless.
Almost all the antiTamil programmes were initiated and implemented by the UNP.
It was the UNP leaders who were in Jaffna directly organized and supervised the torching and burning of the Jaffna Library which was one of the most violent examples of ethnic biblioclasm of the last century. Ranil Wickremesinghe was a part of this UNP government.
Ranil Wickremesinhe was a cabinet minister when the 1983 antiTamil pogrom was initiated by the UNP government led his uncle President J.R.Jeyawardene. Under principles of parliamentary democracy guided by collective responsibility Ranil Wickremesinghe too is guilty of the crimes committed against the Tamils in 1983. It was when Ranil Wickremesinghe was a Cabinet Minister; the UNP Government initiated war as a solution to the ethnic conflict. Ranil Wickremesinghe was a member of inner UNP Cabinet that organized and supervised military operations against the Tamils.
Ranil Wickremesinghe ordered and witnessed the execution of hundreds of innocent young men from Kelaniya area in his torture chamber in Batalanda in 1989 which was confirmed by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry which comprised retired judges. The courts rejected charges based on technical issues, not factual issues. Since Ranil Wickremesinghe committed these horrendous crimes in Batalanda, Ranil Wickremesinghe had to abandon not only his electorate of Biyagama, but also the Gampaha District. Since these murders Ranil Wickremesinghe is an MP without an electorate – thanks to his uncle J. R. Jayawardene’s constitution. After the 1989 Batalanda mass murder, Ranil Wickremesinghe recruited a convicted killer and multiple criminal Gonawala Sunil as his secretary. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s secretary Gonawala Sunil went around killing and intimidating people Ranil Wickremesinghe wanted to be silenced. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s corruption in “LH Plantations” has been highlighted with excruciating details by his closest ally Mangala Samaraweera. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s very close family members own several newspapers, broadcasting and telecasting stations which promote Ranil Wickremesinghe and help to prolong his political survival.
