Mrs. Amirthalingam’s appeal to Sri Lanka President

2010-09-14
The widow of one of the most prominent leaders the Tamils in Sri Lanka has ever had, has appealed to the government to bring in a political settlement to longstanding grievances of the Tamil community.
Mangayarkarasi Amirthalingam made the appeal after visiting the place –for the first time –where her husband Appapillai Amirthalingam was shot dead by Tamil Tiger assassins.
Mrs. Amirthalingam and their younger son, Dr. Bahirathan Amirthalingam, recently visited Sri Lanka for a BBC World Service radio documentary
produced and presented by Saroj Pathirana of BBC Sinhala service.
Mr. Amirthalingam, the only Tamil national ever to rise to the important position of the Leader of the Opposition in Sri Lanka was shot dead at his home by his own people, the LTTE, on 13 July 1989.
He was seen as a threat by the Tamil Tigers, whose struggle Mr. Amirthalingam initially supported.
“Such a lot of lives lost; half the population is gone, the president should recognise the sacrifices” Mrs. Amirthalingam told the BBC.
The widow who actively took part in her late husband’s political campaigning obviously has strong words against the Tigers, whose violent campaign to become the “sole representatives” of the Tamils resulted in unthinkable acts of brutality.
“If they were fighting for the Tamils, why did they kill my husband? Why did they kill moderate politicians like Neelan Thiruchelvam?” she questioned.
But she says she has no intention of seeking revenge from the Tigers.
“I think they lost an opportunity to solve the issue. When they were in power, The LTTE should have negotiated a political settlement with the government,” the widow of the senior Tamil politician said.
And her emotional appeal to Mr. Rajapaksa is to provide a solution for the Tamils to live in dignity and as equal citizens in Sri Lanka.
“We can’t go to any other country. We have our land, we have our language and culture so this must be honoured by the president. He should come up with a reasonable political settlement. He has the power, he has every right to do so, I can bow down if he does something to our people,” she said.
