UNP decides not to nominate a member to the Parliamentary Council to be established under the 18th Amendment

A senior UNP parliamentarian told Lanka News Web that it was likely that the Opposition Leader may not nominate a representative to the Parliamentary Council established under the 18th Amendment.

Several party seniors have requested the Opposition Leader not to participate in any action that would give effect to the 18th Amendment, which is opposed by the party, and to refrain from nominating a person to the Parliamentary Council as the final decision of implementing its proposals lay in the hands of the President.

The UNP MP also said that another group of party seniors have requested the Opposition Leader to appoint TNA MP and Attorney M.A. Sumanthiran as the Opposition Leader’s nominee to the Parliamentary Council.He added that while Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has officially informed the Opposition Leader propose his nominee to the Council within a period of one week, the final decision on the matter is to be arrived at during the UNP Working Committee meeting scheduled fro Saturday.The Parliamentary Council consists of the Prime Minister, Speaker, Opposition Leader and a nominee by the Prime Minister and a nominee by the Opposition Leader.According to the 18th Amendment, the nominees have to be parliamentarians and not represent the communities that the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader belong to.
