Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris to resign?
2010-09-07
Disgusted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s attempt to change the country’s constitution for one man’s benefit, Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris is to resign on 08th September making a special statement in the parliament, the LankaNewsWeb can exclusively reveal.Minister Peiris has told close supporters and associates that as a person with dignity and world reputation for his professional work, he no longer can tolerate the dictatorial way Rajapaksas are running the country. He has said that the 18th amendment to the
constitution is the most dictatorial constitutional change he has seen in all his professional life.“Nowhere in the world has a country changed the constitution for one man’s benefit,” he has told the supporters. The distinguished professor of law and author of many books referred to by university students is also the author of the new amendment. He also wrote a similar amendment when former President Chandrika Kumarathunga unsuccessfully tried to change the constitution paving the way for her to continue her tenure as the Prime Minister in 2000.Prof. Peiris believes he has had enough being exploited by executive presidents for their personal agenda. Minister Peiris is also angry that President Mahinda Rajapaksa using him to promote Namal Rajapaksa as the successor to Rajapaksa reign.“I am still respected as an academic and I can easily join any leading university in the world. I am not an apologist on behalf of dictators,” he has said.Another incident that has angered the minister is President directing a MSD security person to keep a close eye as Minister Peiris held discussions with UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya on constitutional changes. It is also believed that a group of backbench SLFP MPs is also planning to cross over when the amendment is taken for voting though many unhappy cabinet ministers have decided to stay on for the moment.
