The company, Royal Ceylon Teas Ltd., owned by Sri Lankan Ambassador to the US Jaliya Wickremasuriya and his brother And chairman of the Airport Authority Colonel Prasanna Wickremasuriya, exports tea to the US through Chivaro Shipping Ltd, which is a subsidiary of Hayleys Company. However, the Wickremasuiryas it is learnt are trying to avoid paying a courier bill of Rs. 22 lakhs to the shipping company using their political connections.
Chivaro Shipping had sent the relevant invoice several months ago and since there had been no response, officials from the Hayleys Company have personally informed of the situati0on to the Ambassador and the Chairman. Officials of Hayleys have been unable to take any legal action due to the political powers enjoyed by Jaliya and Prasanna Wickremasuriya."
