State Terrorism is alive in Sri Lanka.
Dear Jayantha,
I think it's quite natural for the minorities to react at the majority fundamentals but the largest majority are the poor. From that perspective, if we believe that those caught in the viscous cycle of poverty purely by virtue of birth, still share basic similar aspirations with those who are more fortunate, Sri Lankan governments have no moral right to deprive innocent civilians of their fundamental freedoms. Thereafter, to free innocent people and not provide them with equal opportunity, simply because they are less fortunate, is politically unethical.
It is not Sarath Fonseka's wish to incriminate a heroic army but there is a process of winning the peace, that's most desired by those directly affected by the 30 year old civil war. Many innocent people who hoped make sacrifices themselves, that their children may benefit, have no hope that even their grand children may live a better life, due to unfairness. Not only the lessons commission but also the exoneration of liberation forces, in combating violence and extremism, which adversely affects the ordinary man the most, is the responsibility of the United Nations.
I feel the President doesn't want to interact with the socially intolerant but in winning the hearts and minds of the people, transparency and integrity is required. Including personal misunderstanding, imagined revenge and vendetta is not good governance but what's urgent is to address the affected's grievances justly and honorably. This is not weakness but requires strength of character. It's natural that both sides will attempt gain maximum mileage but in the absence of adequate political representation, the victors could be magnanimous, even as the vanquished - gracious.
Thank you
Ravin.
The problems of the poor are worldwide.
ReplyDeleteThe problem of the Tamils as a minority and State Terrorism is a specific
problem for Sri Lanka. Let there be no confusion on that subject.
