Subjects that were under three ministries have been brought under the Defence Ministry through an urgent Gazette notification. Several subjects under the ministries of Irrigation and Water Management, Agriculture and Construction, Engineering Services and Public Utilities have been brought under the Defence Ministry.According to the Gazette notification all streams and low lying lands in the Gampaha and Galle Districts have been brought under the purview of the Land Reclamation and Development Corporation. Environment organizations have warned that the acquisition of low lying lands and streams by the Land Reclamation and Development Corporation that has been established to fill land would have a negative impact on the environment.
