Sarath Silva: the man paved the way for democratic dictator
2010-09-06
Following Hitler’s footsteps, Mahinda Rajapaksa is soon to become the first ever democratically elected dictator in Sri Lanka. Rajapaksa will no doubt soon bring in another amendment to automatically hand over his executive power to the heir to the throne, Namal Rajapaksa. The so- called “peoples representatives”, both from the government and the so-called opposition will vote for any amendment without even mildly criticizing it.It is Sarath Silva, the controversial former dictator in the Supreme Court who paved the way for his former buddy to become the supreme dictator in ‘Wonder of Asia”.Remember Helping Hambantota that almost destroyed Mahinda’s presidency hopes? Remember how Sarath Silva as the Chief Justice handled it?
Instead of investigating the allegation, Sarath Silva castigated the petitioner, UNP MP Kabir Hashim, and warned he would be imprisoned if similar complaints followed.A land like no other!. The Supreme Court throws away a serious fraud allegation – let alone a small amount under normal circumstances – but putting millions of rupees donated by the international community to help millions of tsunami affected by none other than the Prime Minister in the country! In any other CIVILISED country the man would’ve lost the post and even sent to jail.A land like no other!!!Of course it is not only the government that kept Sarath Silva in his position; Ranil Wickramasinghe’s UNP government deliberately avoided a golden opportunity to impeach the man hoping UNP would use such a valuable “asset,” who interprets the constitution according his whims and fancies, “ for better use”!.So yes Ranil Wickramasinghe cannot shy away from his share of responsibility in creating the first ever democratically elected dictator in Sri Lanka. Ranil though a visionary leader does not bother what happened to the country and comfortable sitting in his leader of the opposition chair until he retires from politics. But Ranil is of course not the worst culprit.Sarath Silva’s support to his former buddy does not stop with Helping Hambantota.Apart from the Chief Justice of the country, anybody who has even little knowledge of the constitution knows that under 1978 constitution if any member of parliament crosses over, s/he loses the parliamentary seat. But not for Sarath silva! When Rohitha Bogollagama crossed over to President Kumarathunga’s government from the UNP, Sarath Silva ruled that it was constitutional. Then Keheliya Rambukwella and Mahinda Samarasinghe followed his footsteps to Rajapaksa government. Sarath Silva’s cangaroo court verdict was the same! That paved the way for 17 UNP members – including shameless, pathetic apologist G.L.Peiris -to cross over and seize the power in the SLFP-led government. The rest is history. It is therefore the former dictator in the Supreme Court Sarath Silva who wanted to be the Prime Minister Under Fonseka presidency cannot wash his hands from what is happening today and tomorrow, including the sorry fate his new found pal, Sarath Fonseka.
