LSSP decides not to support the constitutional amendments
2010-09-01
The politburo of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) had decided on the 30th not to support the constitutional amendments presented by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. LSSP politburo members Lal Wijenayake said the two LSSP members in parliament would abstain from voting for the constitutional amendments.
Wijenayake said the LSSP had from the inception objected the formation of an Executive Presidency and has fought for the abolishing of such a post.
The LSSP was to hold discussions on the matter with two other Left parties.
The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Communist Party was scheduled to meet on the 31st to decide on the party’s stance on the constitutional amendments.
The constitutional amendments have been presented to a five member Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Shirani Bandaranayake, K. Sripavan, P.A. Ratnayake, S.I. Imam and R.K. Suresh to determine whether the amendments are consistent with the Constitution.

The Supreme Court decision is to be handed over to the Speaker during the next parliamentary sessions.
