Nine UNP MPs vote for the amendments

The 18th Amendment to the Constitution was passed in parliament with a majority of 144 votes with 161 voting in favour and 17 against.

However a total of nine UNP parliamentarians voted in favor of the amendment.

UNP MPs Prabha Ganeshan and Palani Digambaram joined the government last month and UNP parliamentarians Lakshman Seneviratne, Earl Gunasekara, Manusha Nanayakkara, Upeksha Swarnamali, Nimal Wijesinghe and Abdul Carder crossed over to the government and voted in favour.

UNP MP Jaya Sri Ranga voted for the 18th Amendment while sitting in the opposition.

Eight SLMC members who were elected from the UNP voted in support of the amendments.

TNA Ampara District parliamentarian M. Piyasena also voted in favour of the amendment.

The DNA and the TNA, excluding TNA’s Piyasena, voted against the 18th Amendment."
